Homeland Security Shut Down.... How the Government May Fail Us!
NBC's political blog just notated the following:
"t appears we're headed for yet another shutdown -- this time over the Department of Homeland Security. Republicans claim that Senate Democrats are the ones obstructing things, because they are filibustering a DHS funding bill that contains riders rolling back President Obama's executive actions on immigration. Yet as we learned during the last government shutdown, the side that's using government spending to demand changes to existing law or directives is going to be side that gets blamed if the government (or just part of it) shuts down. But don't take our word for it. Take the word of GOP Sen. (and likely presidential candidate) Lindsey Graham. "If we don't fund the Department of Homeland Security, we'll get blamed as a party," he said on Sunday."
Senate Majority Leader McConnell offered a POTENTIAL way out of the shutdown standoff. Per NBC's Kelly O'Donnell, McConnell has proposed a stand-alone bill that denies funding for the implementation of Obama's 2014 executive action. This bill, O'Donnell adds, is not attached to DHS spending. The glass-half-full take here is that Republicans, for the first time, are now legislatively separating the immigration rollbacks from the DHS funding, which offers a potential way out of the impasse. (Indeed, NBC's Frank Thorp reports that Dem Sen. Joe Manchin could likely support this McConnell bill if it comes AFTER a clean bill to fund DHS.) The glass-half-empty take is that we have NO IDEA if House Republicans will buy this gambit. There's another potential way out: McConnell and House Speaker John Boehner could propose language promising to prohibit any funds implementing Obama's executive actions on immigration as long as they're tied up in the courts.
I don't think toying with global security is a way to get your way. This has been the trend in congress and it isn't why we elect people. Not only is my business potentially threatened by these threats, but so is the livelihood of so many hardworking people..... Adults don't act this way!

Two terrorists set free into U.S. by Homeland Security Dept.
As I discuss in my book, there is a lot of red tape and rules that don't seem to interact well with one another in this country. Plus, we have rights that still have to be protected and we have programs without the proper funding resources. There isn't a single issue that I can point my finger at tonight and say, "Yes, this is where we failed" when it comes to this specific situation. So, where are these men today? We don't know. We lost track of them once they were released. All we know is they entered Canada seeking asylum. That's it.
Mr. Johnson had to be transparent with this matter and I'm sure he is very frustrated with the Judge's decision. I think many people are. Now, to be fair, the men in question are considered terrorists by the USA because of their group affiliation. Both men were members of the PKK, or Kurdistan Workers’ Party, which has been battling for Kurdish rights within Turkey for decades. Our country put the PKK (and its members) on the list of Terrorists groups even though they technically don't fall into the same category as other terrorist groups who truly want to hurt America. So, it is a grey area and while we need to use more common sense in this country (who is to say the PKK claim wasn't a cover), we also can't have across-the-board rules that confine people seeking asylum or let those who want to harm our country slip through our hands because of a loop hole.
There is no "right" answer here. Only frustrating facts and valid arguments on all sides of this issue. I'm hopeful, going forward, that we can address scenarios like these in a more microscopic manner. Now, because the men are in Canada, it will be hard to watch them and see if we made the right decision as a country. Instead, we have to hope, wait and see.

Homeland Security and Immigration
This said, from a Homeland Security standpoint- something has to be done that will ensure we are protecting our country from allowing terrorists (who fly into Mexico or Canada) from entering our country with great ease. Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson sent an open letter to the President on the issue. In it, Johnson says "I support and recommended to the President each of the reforms to the immigration system that he will announce today. These recommendations were in turn the result of candid and extended consultations between me and the leadership of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), as well as outside stakeholders. Along the way, I listened to members of the workforce who implement and enforce the law to hear their views. In my own view, any significant change in policy requires the insight of those who administer the system. I believe we have done that here. The executive actions the President will announce will reform and improve the system in a number of respects. These executive actions are well within our legal authority to direct and implement."
I don't think that the immigration orders will open us up to any more terrorism. It could, but I doubt it. Why? We have problems in other areas. I believe a lack of funding and program sustainability will cause further issues- which in turn will be blamed on any executive order that the President implements. I agree with Jeh Johnson but I know what will look like a lack of ability from the DHS will result not because of immigration and border issues (although that is always a concern) but because we are not handling money issues and program issues properly now! Immigration amnesty or not, the DHS is running out of resources as this country is running out of money. Something has to change- but like I said, not all issues are black and white or cut and dry.
"So, Twyla... what is your point?"
As we head into the weekend, take time to consider your own business. Think about the issues you have at hand and growth vs. income. Can you blame all of your problems on one source? Or is it easy to blame challenges on one area because addressing the few roots that lay underneath may be harder because their are no obvious solutions?

Over Thinking Your Branding Approach?
Working with our branding firm, I learned a few things about an approach to branding most marketing companies refuse to share. Considering your own brand imaging, take a peek at the following tips.
#1. Are you treating your website like a garage sale? If you said yes, you’re doing it right. Great garage sales put their big items up front so people driving by can see the most popular items. Knick knacks, clothes, baby items - these are all small end products people could use once they get of of the car and into your garage sale. However, the small end products usually don’t attract business from the street and people tend to just drive on by if they are put out front. So, know what it is that sells your company the most (service or product) and feature it all of the first page of your website and social media efforts.
#2. Do you have the basics? Do you have a specific font to use for all of your collateral? What about color codes? If you don’t have specifics and you’ve been “winging it” - you are harming your brands viability within today’s market. Sure, you’re not losing any money directly as a result of this misstep but you could be making so much more!

SEO and Your Business
SEO words are picked up quicker by Google and other search engines. This is why websites in the past had a lot of key word (or SEO content) that made no sense or didn’t really say anything at all. Things are changing, again, and 2014 is going to change how internet prowlers and content writers use SEO as an element to capture business.
First, branding has to be more important than just getting content online. This is opposite of a few years past. If your branding and content isn’t providing real info, it’s not working.
Second, Google is relying more than ever on human signals in the form of shares and mentions on social media to help vet sites. What does this mean? If you’re not placing social media sharing tags on every form of content you write or publish, it isn’t being recognized as a searchable asset in Google. Finally, purposing how your SEO content words work together. You should have content, key words and links in this order. Any other priority and your efforts will not produce results.
I hope this helps you steer how you will drive your digital marketing efforts in 2014.

Cyber 9-11 | It IS Possible
Many retailers are not aware there is a cyber security issue until the attack has occurred and already performed damage. Any business with a heavy web presence, especially one that collects data or money online, needs to have a reliable back-up plan should an attack occur, new approaches to identifying potential security breaches should be sought after, and we as consumers and business need to practice vigilance against potential threats. Cyber security and hackers should be taken seriously. Identify theft through cyber security tasks can help mask terrorists and transfers of cash can help fund plans- never a good thing!
While the majority of true potential internet risks surrounds our military data when it comes to security in cyber space, we should always be aware of our security systems and our weaknesses online.

Business Lie Dector
1. I need time to thing about this.
This isn't a lie- but it isn't the truth either. When someone says this to you it means he or she is still looking at other candidates and you're not their first choice. If someone says this to you, pass on any re-interview offers, opps. to lower your rate as a consultant or re-pitching your services. It is a waste of your time.
2. I need to know I'm your only, or most important, client.
All clients are important. How you answer this will help people determine if you're a liar. So, if you don't want to fall on other people's BS meter- be honest. Try saying something like, "Our clients are like children. We don't have favorites and try to help each one grow. However, some children need special attention. Our special child pays us double what you're paying now for this service. Is this something you're willing to do?"
3. Talking too much. People who tend to over explain things tend to stretch their capabilities. Direct, short answers usually are an indicator of someone telling the truth. Always keep this in mind in every sense of your personal and business dealings.

Office Politics - Are You Playing the Game?
Some people swear office politics are just a fact of life. Well, that isn't really true. In fact, office politics have brought our country to a standstill. So, how do you know when office politics and the game playing are falling on your shoulders? Well, ask yourself the following questions. If you answer "yes" to more than one- you're playing the game and it is time for things to change.
Does your company lack in vision? In other words, are your making a profit without really knowing where you are going or why?
Forget team meetings, do you hold a lot of one-on-one meetings?
Do you speak of others more than you speak to them?
Are you constantly questioning your employees and/or peers and their motivation for everything they do?
Do you get what you want from people by manipulating them opposed to just asking them to do something for you?
Are you not involved within your organization on a personal level? I mean, do you have your assistants send emails on your behalf, call people on your behalf - perhaps even sign the holiday cards?
You can "undo" office politics- but it is going to take work. If you answered yes to more than one question- shoot me an email and let's talk! If I get enough responses, I may hold a free webinar on undoing office politics.

The Government Shutdown.......
- Twyla
Right-wing House Republicans engineered a shutdown of the federal government, by demanding that the Democratic Senate approve a spending bill that would have delayed the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, a demand they knew would not be accepted. Non-essential government activity ceased as of midnight this morning. It's the first such closure of the U.S. government in nearly two decades.
Global markets fell and business owners reacted with anger and alarm. The legislative impasse threatens the fragile economic recovery and could set the stage for a potentially catastrophic default on U.S. Treasury debt later this month.
"This is an absolutely outrageous scenario enabled by inept lawmakers who are bogged down in their own private and unnecessary [interests]," says Larry Miller, founder and chief executive of BNL in Lovettsville, Virginia, which provides systems engineering and program management to the Departments of Defense, Treasury, and the Veterans Administration, among other agencies.
Bracing for Weeks Without their Biggest Customer
Miller's BNL, which is No. 391 on the Inc. 500 this year and has had a three-year compound annual growth rate of more than 1,000 percent, and $6 million in revenue in 2012, prepared for a shutdown that could last as long as a month. Miller reached out to his 55 employees weeks ago and told them that they will not be laid off or furloughed, and that he will do what it takes to get through the tough times.
Miller will offer employees time off, or the option to redeploy to work on project infrastructure, such as process engineering and documentation, updating the process documentation library, and maintaining reference data and materials.
Practically, that means Miller has to continue paying salaries, health care costs that amount to about $1,200 per employee per month, and other benefits at a time when revenue is not flowing.
"Most of our contracts are fixed-price cost accounting standard," Miller says. "There is a high risk we won't recover the cost."
Some Entrepreneurs Stalling Hiring Already
The budget crisis and looming government shutdown will likely force Michael Lin, owner and chief executive of LinTech Global, to put off hiring an employee he wanted to start October 1.
LinTech, of Farmington Hills, Michigan, does enterprise software consulting, systems integration, and help desk and network support for federal agencies as well as commercial entities, is No. 412 on the Inc. 500 list. It had revenue of nearly $3 million in 2012, and has experienced a compound annual growth rate higher than 1,000 percent in the last three years. He was expecting a new federal contract to get signed this month, but that's now in limbo.
"We may have to delay hiring . . . until the project gets the green light," Lin says, adding that, luckily, most of his other projects have already been funded for the year.
More than anything, Lin says he is dismayed by the budget crisis. "By now I am used to this, but it seems to happen every year with the debt ceiling or the government shutdown, it is always in discussion and we have to play it as we go and adjust our strategy," he says.
Razor-Thin Margins Only Getting Thinner
For her part, Joni Green, founder and chief executive of Five Stones Research in Brownsboro, Alabama, says the government shutdown will dramatically affect her business this year. Like Miller, the costs for her contracts are fixed.
"This will put us in negative profitability mode," Green says. "If we ran the business like the government, we would long ago have shut down."
Green, whose company is No. 421 on the Inc. 500 list for 2013, has 51 employees and had revenue of more than $5 million in 2012. Though the company also had a compound annual growth rate of more than 1,000 percent in the past three years, Green thinks her $9 million revenue forecast for 2013 may drop.
Green, whose company provides engineering, logistics, and information management to the Airforce, Army, and Navy, says the sequester from earlier this year has already forced her to operate on razor thin margins.
"We have been driven by the budget cuts and cost slashing so much this past year that the management reserves on our contracts are minimal," she says.
Green says 13 of her contracts, or 80 percent of the total, will be delayed by a government shutdown. Five Stones Research also bills on a monthly basis for the prior month, which could hurt its accounts receivable collections for months, particularly if the shutdown lasts for several weeks or more.
She adds that uncertainty about the debt ceiling, the budget crisis, and lingering questions about pricing for health care next year are like neon blinking question marks making it next to impossible to budget, which the company usually does three years out.
The uncertainty interfered with Green's hiring plans, too.
"We are only hiring if absolutely necessary," Green says. "I would have thought by this time this year, we would have hired three more [employees]."
The Longer-Term Implications Economic experts say the government shutdown could haunt small businesses and their growth prospects for years to come.
In the future, owners seeking funding from bankers or investors will have to explain why they weren't able to meet their budget expectations.
"When you have a funding event, you have to talk about your history and you cannot just use the excuse of the government, because everyone knows it is harming everyone and it just ends up looking bad for entrepreneurs," Laura Gonzalez, professor of finance and business economics at Fordham, says.
BNL's Larry Miller concurs. Speaking as if the shutdown were already a foregone conclusion, he says: If we were able to avoid a shutdown, "we would have been ahead of valuation, and our EBITDA would have been much higher, and banks would have been happier," he adds.

Are You Your Own Brand?
Start with knowing who you are and what your company stands for. If you don't know what your niche is, you can't create a brand. Next, develop your name. Catchy and clever are adored by many. If your name is too generic, your brand won't stand a chance. Your next step is to develop and buy the domain name that corresponds to your brand name. You will also have to secure the Facebook page, Twitter account, Google+ account as well. If you find that your brand name is already "owned" create a different brand name.
Your brand should share useful content. If you are not sharing useful content, only promoting yourself, there is no purpose of starting a brand because it will fail. Online communities love resourcefulness content that is compelling and engaging. Use this tool as a way to develop your brand's voice within your industry. Finally, be risky. Your brand should have an edge that will gain media notice without being too controversial. There is a great quote that goes, "Well behaved women haven't accomplished much in this world." It's true. Step outside of your comfort zone, take a risk and reap the rewards!
Building a brand doesn't happen overnight. It is like building a relationship, you have to develop trust over time.
Until next time,

Starting A Business 101
Step 1. Write down your plan. Business plans are a great way to deal with potential problems before they come up. Evaluating financing, insurance issues, slow sales, etc. can all be addressed before the doors to your new business open when you write a business plan.
Step 2. Use free and local resources. Networking is important when starting a business. Local resources, such as SCORE, can help you obtain grants, understand how to file for a license properly and introduce you to potential new clients.
Step 3. Determine the legal structure of your business. For this step you want to use local resources and a qualified attorney to discuss personal financial circumstances and your business model. An attorney can help you select the right licensing for your company.
Step 4. Understand employer responsibilities. This is a biggie. Different states have different laws and stipulations. If you're going to hire one or one hundred employees you will need to know what you can and can't do when it comes to employment. You will also have to understand what financial responsibilities you will hold to the state as an employer. The SBA has a great resource located here: http://www.sba.gov/content/10-steps-hiring-your-first-employee
Step 5. Register your business name. Many businesses have a legal name and a doing business as (DBA) name. If you will operate as a DBA, you need to set up a fictitious business name with your state. Registering your DBA is done either with your county clerk’s office or with your state government, depending on where your business is located. There are a few states that do not require the registering of fictitious business names. Thus, make sure you ask local free resources and/or your attorney if you need to register your DBA.
Best of luck,
Twyla

Leadership .... do you have it?
1. Take command. It is that easy. True leaders don't wait around for approvals or for opportunity They take charge and make opportunities. So don't wait for that investor to find you... .go out and find that investor!
2. Be emotional because it IS business. I head someone once say they can't be emotional because it is business. WRONG! If you show your passion, people will want to be a part of your brand or buy your products.
3. Stir up curiosity and use your poker face. Have customers ready to buy? Sell them the product and invite them to read about your super, secret upcoming product, via your VIP preferred customer marketing newsletter, when that great product is finally ready. Talk new ideas, services, and products up before they are out but don't reveal everything. Do a great business striptease!
4. Inspire respect. Don't just make people follow your lead, make them WANT to follow your lead. Show compassion and empathy whenever possible.
If you start leading by implementing these four key elements then you will be on your way to success!
